Broadway, 'Tesco Bus Stop'
Probably a newcomer to Peterborough
Without a 'fixed abode' he will have problems with immigration status (will he be able to stay in UK) and State help
It is seasonal, the press publicity surrounding HOMELESSNESS.
YOU SEE HOMELESSNESS AT YULETIDE, YOU SEE A MESSAGE (FROM THE MEDIA)
IT MAKES YOU WANT TO GIVE SOMETHING. YOU MIGHT, YOU MIGHT NOT. It won't change anything you say to yourself
The very next day, in town, you give the man with the dog playing the out of tune guitar £1
Hey - That's ok
IF only the pathetic journalistic values we have sunken into could be improved. BUT, they LOVE it, these journos, I have seen them. They WALLOW in it like Lincolnshire Pigs, those are the values of their newspapers you see. Journalism, a profession?
This rough sleeper(usually males) may possibly booze the days away, no shame in that, many of us English people do that, AND we have homes and receive State help. But it doesn't help the 'State' system, or anyone else come to that, in helping them. Alcohol that is.
Unless we remain sensitive to humanities' ills, we escape reality, we invent our own.
In doing that we run the risk of incaulcating our isolated approach to social ills, like homelessness, to our children. We walk briskly past, 'just walk on by little Johny' says Dad to his child. These are not Christian thoughts and bear little humanity. 'What can we do?' There have always been tramps, rough sleepers, lepers, cripples, beggars, gypsies?'
Fundamental concepts, humanities, ethics, our interface with our 'real' world. NOT the world the media create for our kids but today's reality (NOT Reality TV which is just the opposite) - THAT's what our dear teachers should be teaching, amongst all their other responsibilities. If Parents don't, who will?
